The same applied in regard to his son Marco, where the Court noted that on a salary of about 800 euro per month and a bank account with hardly any funds he could not have purchased a Pajero and issued a substantial cash deposit as he had in fact done, without giving an explanation to account for the money. It noted that the father had admitted to having purchased the BMWs with his unemployed son Roderick’s funds, and therefore the first Court had been justified in concluding that the money had been derived from illegal activities. The Court of Appeal, Mr Justice David Scicluna presiding, did not accept this argument. The defence argued that Alfred Delia had simply registered in his name two BMWs purchased by his son Roderick, and in regard to Marco Delia, it stated that he was a bachelor with fixed employment, and could not be accused of money laundering on the basis of having purchased a Mitsubishi Pajero valued at 14,000 euro. When they were investigating the two brothers about drugs cases, the Police accordingly concluded that their father and their other brother had purchased the vehicles with funds from sales of drugs. Added to this, two other sons of Alfred, Freddie and Roderick, had been found guilty of drug trafficking and had each received a five-year sentence. A father and son who had each been sentenced to eighteen months behind bars have had their sentence changed by the Court of Appeal to a suspended sentence.ħ2-year-old Alfred Delia and his 51-year-old son Marco had been found guilty of money laundering after they had purchased vehicles in 2010 without giving an explanation for the provenance of the funds for these purchases.
